Urinary problems in cats
Urinary tract issues are surprisingly common in cats. While common, it’s vital they're taken seriously, and that your vet examines any cat showing symptoms of urinary problems.
Both female and male cats can suffer from urinary issues, but the types of problems can differ. Male cats are more prone to urinary retention, while urinary tract infections are more common in female cats.
Common signs that might indicate your cat has urinary problems include urinating more often than usual. Sometimes, they may strain to urinate for long periods, frequently and without much success, or pass only small amounts. Some cats with urinary issues might also urinate outside their litter box.
Urinary problems can have various causes, but they all need to be taken seriously. For example, urinary retention is a life-threatening condition. That's why you should always take a cat with urinary problems to the vet for a check-up to find out what's causing the symptoms.
What happens at the vet's? Often, the vet will start by taking a urine sample from your cat. This helps them understand the underlying causes of the symptoms. Sometimes, an ultrasound may also be needed, and in certain cases, X-rays and blood tests might be part of the examination.
