Getting a cat insurance
There are a few things to consider when moving your cat insurance from one company to another:
Contract period:
If the old insurance has a contract period, the switch can only happen once it ends.
Time Gaps:
It's important that there is no gap between the insurances. This can affect, for example, waiting periods.
Medical history:
Carefully consider your move if your cat has a medical history, especially within the previous 24 months. This is because previous conditions are not covered by the new insurance.
Does it seem a little complicated? It doesn't have to be!
We can help you move your cat insurance to us. When you explore our insurance options and calculate your price, you can also choose to retrieve information about your old insurance. Then we can make sure your new insurance starts just when your contract period expires. You can also give us permission to handle the cancellation of the old insurance.
You choose a start date when you sign up for your cat insurance. You can see the date you selected in your insurance letter.
Accidents are covered from the start, but for diseases, waiting periods often apply. The waiting period may be start on the payment day instead of the chosen start day if you do not pay your insurance on time.
When you insure a kitten younger than 120 days and have an approved veterinary certificate or switch to Lassie from another Swedish pet insurance company, no waiting period applies.
If you want to switch to Lassie and need help ensuring that the new insurance starts on the right day, you can get it in our tool to customise the insurance and see the price.
Annual payment: You pay in connection with the insurance's start date. When the insurance is renewed, a new annual payment is made in connection with the start of the new insurance year.
Monthly payment: An initial payment is made in connection with the insurance's start date. Then we withdraw money on the 28th each month (but it may take up to 3 days before it shows in your account). When your insurance is renewed and you switch insurance year, a withdrawal will be made. Money is then drawn on the 28th each month as usual.
With Lassie, you have access to a payment portal where you can choose your payment method and see withdrawals.
Seems like something has gone wrong with your payments? Feel free to contact us so we can sort it out together!
Yes, the price of your insurance is affected by your chosen size of deductible.
With a high deductible, we pay a smaller amount for each injury, which means you get a lower insurance price.
With a low deductible, we pay a larger amount for each vet visit, which means you get a higher price for your cat insurance.
You decide what level you think suits you and your situation. See how your choices affect your insurance price by calculating a price proposal.
We’d love to insure your old cat! At Lassie, there is no upper age limit for the cat insurance and the maximum amount of compensation is not reduced for older cats.
It is actually common for older cats to need to visit the vet more often than younger cats. The risk that you will need to use the insurance therefore increases. This suggests that it can be a good idea to continue insuring even your old cat. However, a higher risk also brings a higher price. We will, of course, let you know about any price changes in advance.
We do our best to avoid large price increases, but if you still feel that the senior cat's insurance is starting to get pricey it is good to know that we do not have a commitment period.
You can start your cat insurance with us when your cat is in Sweden and you do not need to show a veterinary certificate when you take out the insurance. The insurance does not cover disease caused by parasites and/or disease caused by infection that the cat brought to Sweden, nor other damage or problems it brought when it was imported to Sweden. See our Terms and Conditions for more information.
Please note that there are rules you must follow when importing a cat from abroad. One tip is to start looking for information about what applies when a cat is brought into Sweden at The Swedish Board of Agriculture and The Swedish Customs.
Contents of the cat insurance
The deductible is the part of the cost you are responsible for in the event of an injury. Your insurance can reimburse you for the rest of the veterinary costs. The purpose of the deductible is to encourage caution.
The deductible is divided into a fixed part and a variable part:
The fixed deductible consists of a predetermined amount and is only paid the first time a claim is made each deductible period. A lower fixed deductible gives a more expensive cat insurance and a higher fixed deductible gives a cheaper cat insurance.
The variable deductible corresponds to a percentage of the claim cost (excluding fixed deductible) and is paid at each claim. A lower variable deductible will result in a more expensive cat insurance and a higher variable deductible will result in a cheaper cat insurance.
When you get a cat insurance from Lassie, you can choose between a number of deductible levels. In your insurance policy, you can see which deductible you have chosen for your cat insurance.
Example of calculation of deductible and compensation for cat insurance:
Let's say your vet visit costs 12 000 kr. You have a fixed deductible of 1 500 kr and a variable deductible of 15 %.
You pay: 1 500 kr (fixed deductible) + 1 575 kr (variable deductible calculated on 10 500 kr (12 000 kr - 1 500 kr)) = 3 075 kr
Lassie reimburses the remaining amount: 8 925 kr
Lassie's deductible period is 365 days and starts at the beginning of the policy year. You pay a fixed deductible not more than once per deductible period (insurance year) regardless of the number of visits to the vet. You pay your variable deductible at each veterinary visit.
Lassie's cat insurance has a waiting period of 14 days. This means that our cat insurance does not compensate for diseases that have shown up within 14 days from the start date of the insurance. Lassie's waiting period for illness is unusually short compared to the waiting periods for many other cat insurances.
For accidents, your cat insurance applies directly, without a waiting period. For C-sections (Can be included in the Large and Medium packages, as well as in the breeder's insurance.), there is a waiting period of 60 days. For tooth resorption, there is a waiting period of 12 months. For certain joint and skeletal diseases, special conditions apply regarding the waiting period, read more in our terms and conditions.
If your cat insurance starts before your kitten has turned 120 days, it applies directly without a waiting period. But this requires that there is a veterinary certificate, without remark, no more than ten days old when the insurance starts.
If you switch directly from another Swedish cat insurance, without any gaps, your cat insurance with us applies directly. If your previous cat insurance had a less comprehensive coverage, you have a waiting period only on the increase.
The veterinary care amount is the maximum amount we reimburse you for veterinary care per policy year. When your cat insurance is renewed, your veterinary care amount is also restored.
Our different packages for cat insurance and their maximum amount per year:
Mini: Covers veterinary care costs up to 30 000 SEK per insurance year
Medium: Covers veterinary care costs up to 60 000 SEK per insurance year
Large: Covers veterinary care costs up to 160 000 SEK per insurance year
For more information about our different types of cat insurance and what they cover - see our insurance terms and conditions. There is a tabular overview on the cat insurance information page. If you click on one of the "Calculate price" buttons and fill in your information, you can also compare our packages and see what they cost for your particular four-legged friend.
Lassie's cat insurance is valid in the Nordic countries and for visits shorter than one year in countries within the EEA and in the United Kingdom. Trips abroad longer than 3 months must be approved in advance for the insurance to be valid.
Please be aware that there are rules to follow when cats cross borders. Investigate well in advance what requirements there are. The Swedish Board of Agriculture will let you know what requirements there are for vaccinations, passports, ID tags, and certificates. The Swedish Customs can tell you how to report entry into Sweden. Also check what rules apply in the country you are traveling to and what applies for possible transports such as flights, trains or ferries.
No, we do not have breed-specific restrictions on the veterinary care reimbursement in our cat insurance policies.
If you have a cat of a so-called high-risk breed, you should pay extra attention when comparing cat insurance policies. Certain breeds have a much higher risk of suffering from certain diseases and ailments. Those very problems are often excluded from pet insurance policies with others to keep their prices down. We offer cat insurance that also covers them. That's so you can choose an option without breed-specific restrictions if you want, and because all animals deserve care. This means that our cat insurance is sometimes more expensive for certain breeds.
In the context of cat insurance, an accident is defined as a sudden external event that physically affects the cat. For example, if your cat has fallen from a high tree and injured itself. It also counts as an accident if the cat has swallowed a foreign object or has been poisoned.
Accidents are covered during the insurance waiting period, but note that illness occurring during the waiting period is not considered an accident.
Would you like more information about what is considered an accident? Then you're welcome to take a look at our terms and conditions.

Yes, after an initial waiting period of 12 months, TR (FORL) is covered by all of our insurance packages.
If your cat shows symptoms of TR (FORL) when the insurance starts, the disease will not be compensated. If your cat starts showing symptoms of TR (FORL) during the waiting period, an exception may be imposed so that the disease is not covered.

At Lassie, complications related to pregnancy are covered by the Medium and Big packages. However, veterinary care or medicine costs associated with normal pregnancy are not covered. Nor are costs to terminate pregnancy due to unwanted mating. For the Medium and Big packages, delivery complications and a first c-section are covered, after a waiting period of 60 days.
The Small package does not cover complications related to pregnancy or delivery, nor a c-section. Nor are costs associated with normal pregnancy or costs to terminate unwanted pregnancies covered.
In order for an additional cesarean section to be covered, a breeder insurance can be added. (Small + Breeder Insurance covers a first c-section. Medium or Big + Breeder Insurance can cover two c-sections.)
Cat insurance claims
Yes, we offer direct insurance claims handling!
With direct insurance claims, we mean that the insurance company and the vet handle the payment themselves. This way, you do not have to pay out of pocket while waiting for reimbursement and only pay your deductible (and any administrative fees) to the vet.
We offer direct claims handling weekdays 08-17 (with the exception of holidays).
Let the veterinary clinic know if you want to make a direct claim and make sure to have your insurance number available. Most, but not all, veterinary clinics offer help with direct claims.
More information about direct insurance claims can be found on our claims handling page.
You can choose to settle directly at the vet office, report your damage via email, or make a claim in the app. We have a page with everything you need to know about making an insurance claim.
