Cats and harnesses

If you can't let your cat roam freely outdoors but still want them to experience nature and get more exercise, taking them out on a harness is a great idea. Not all cats take to this straight away, but it's always worth a try! This takes a bit of patience and practice, but it's rewarding if your cat enjoys it.

Make sure you choose a harness that fits your cat comfortably around their neck and body. If you're unsure about the right size, pop into a pet shop for advice.

Here's how to get your cat used to going out in a harness:

• Start by getting your cat accustomed to wearing the harness indoors. Don't keep it on for too long at first, especially if they're new to it. Try to engage your cat with a toy or treat while they're wearing it, to distract them and help them associate the harness with fun. Repeat this once a day until your cat is comfortable and doesn't try to remove it.

• The next step is to go for a short walk outside! Think about where you're going beforehand so you know you won't bump into dogs or too many people - this can make your cat very nervous, especially in an environment that's new to them. The first time, your cat probably won't want to go very far at all, which is perfectly normal. You'll probably have to take it out several times until it starts to relax and wants to explore outside. It will take some patience, and it's important that you reward your cat with lots of praise and cuddles every time you go out.
  

• Your cat will need time to get used to the leash even outdoors - make sure you don't pull or tug on the leash, but keep it slack so your cat doesn't feel pressured to go any direction.
