Training your dog to walk nicely on a lead
There are many ways to train loose-lead walking, but here’s a fun exercise to encourage your dog to want to stay close to you, both on and off the lead. Rewarding your dog often for the behaviour we want to see more of is key, so our trainer Lina Lundin shows you the best way to treat them.
Here's how:
Start by walking backwards with your dog. To encourage your dog to stick close to your leg, give them treats frequently as you walk.
Once your dog is following you smoothly, you can introduce turns. This helps train them to keep following you no matter where you go.
Practise the first two steps often to build up a strong history of rewards for being near your leg.
Now, while walking backwards, turn to face your dog. This teaches them to continue following you by your side. Watch the video to see how to make the turn. Keep rewarding them generously.
Now, make the turn and only reward your dog once they’ve taken a step forward with you.
Gradually increase the number of steps you take before your dog gets their treat. Practise this for as long as you want your dog to be able to walk comfortably by your side.
